Scout Finch
Jean Louise Finch is Atticus Finch’s daughter. Most people call her Scout. She is five years old at the
beginning of the book and we get to see her grow and mature. She is a tomboy and doesn’t like when people try
to get her to act like a girl. She is adventurous and likes to play outside, she mostly likes to follow Jem around and do
what he does because she’d rather be apart of the boys. She is also known as the narrator of the whole book.
She explains the story from her point of view. Scout is very intelligent and she likes to read.
Scout tried to change Maycomb and believed that everybody should be equal. She really
hated that everyone hated the blacks.
Atticus Finch is Jem and Scout’s Dad. He is in his 50’s during the book, he was left to raise his kids on his own after his wife past away, with the help of Calpurnia their servant. Atticus is a lawyer and towards the middle of the book he volunteers to help defend Tom Robinson who is a black man and on trial for rape. He wanted to give him a chance to live because everyone knew that the other person on trial who supposedly got raped, her father was a liar. Atticus wanted to teach the kids not to be racist so maybe one day they could change the town. During the book he acts like this perfect influence on Jem and Scout to teach them to not be racist.
Boo Radley is a quiet character in the book but he also plays a big role. Boo Radley got in trouble one day and was grounded. His father never let him leave the house, he was 16 when this happened. So he never got to live as a young man or never had friends. Now he is in his 30’s and has never come out of the house. There was a rumor going around that he wasn’t alive or that he was a ghost. But none of those rumors were true what so ever. Everybody was afraid of his house, they never wanted to walk by. But one day Jem and Scout both went on the lawn. Boo thought that they were his friends.
Since Boo thought they were his friends he would put toys in the hole of a tree on his front yard. So whenever Jem and Scout went back they could take them and play with them. Jem and Scout never saw Boo and they were both really curious to see if those rumors were true also just to see him. One day Jem and Scout were walking home and it was really dark. Jem and Scout ended up being attacked by another character in the book. Boo saw that his friends were in trouble and went out of the house to help them. He ended up seeing the attacker (Bob Ewell) with a knife and wanted to help them. He saw Jem hurt and lying on the ground and he saw Scout about to be hurt. So he took the knife and killed Bob. Boo didn’t get in trouble because Heck Tate the sheriff wanted not to make a big thing. He also did a good thing because he killed the most annoying person in town.
